What is Codeine?
Codeine, also known as methylmorphine, is a mild pain reliever and cough suppressant that has similar side effects to morphine and hydrocodone. It may be taken orally in the form of tablets or solutions, or it may be injected into the body. When taken in excess, this drug can cause malfunctioning of the brain. As a narcotic drug, Codeine affects the physiological and emotional responses of a user to pain.

Why do people use Codeine?
Codeine intake is habit-forming when used regularly. It is one of the prescription drugs that are regulated because it has reported cases of dependence of its users. Increased consumption of the drug is often due to tolerance, and users feel the need to have additional amounts of the drug to be able to feel its effects. Compared to morphine, Codeine is easily absorbed by the body as it enters the gastrointestinal tract, which is primarily the reason why most people who have past drug problems have the tendency to be dependent on Codeine.
In some countries, Codeine is found in small volumes in some over-the-counter cough syrups, which is why a few heroin and other drug dependents tend to get Codeine to minimize the withdrawal symptoms from their former addiction.

What are the signs of Codeine addiction?
Compulsive and frequent use of Codeine is the number one sign of Codeine addiction. A Codeine dependent may also circumvent legal acquisition of the drug just to get a hold of it and fulfill his cravings. A person who is into Codeine abuse may not be aware of his dependence until the symptoms of withdrawal arise. Suddenly stopping taking the medication can cause a dependent to experience excessive sweating, insomnia, runny nose, dehydration, fever, high blood pressure, among others.

What are the side effects of Codeine addiction?
Codeine addiction causes severe physical and mental damage to a person. The side effects of misuse of Codeine include the following:

  • Poor eyesight or constriction of the pupils.
  • Depression.
  • Nausea and constipation.
  • Failure of the liver and kidney.
  • Sexual problems.
  • Rashes on the skin and itchiness.
  • Seizures.
  • Bleeding of the stomach or of the gastrointestinal tract.
