What is hydrocodone?
Hydrocodone is a semi-synthetic opioid. It is used to relieve pain and/or to suppress cough in individuals that take it.
Why people use hydrocodone?
Among illicit users there are sensations of euphoria and other opiate typical effects. There are some singular concerns for recreational users though, since hydrocodone is typically combined with acetaminophen which is toxic.
Hydrocodone addiction can occur among individuals that takes the drug consistently. Individuals that use the drug illicitly are no different and some amount of cross-over use among opiate addicts does occur.
Hydrocodone addiction
In many cases individuals that become addicted to other opiates may use hydrocodone when they can not get their drug of choice.
What are the signs of hydrocodone addiction?
Signs may vary dramatically depending on if the individual has just administered the drug or if they are experiencing withdrawal symptoms. They may include anxiety or extreme calm. In addition there may be constipation. Fear and mood changes may also manifest. There may also be the occurrence of tightness in the chest.
What are the side effects of hydrocodone?
The side effects of using hydrocodone also vary. Some of the same signs listed above are common in each use of the drug or during the time between uses. The effects tend to be psychological in nature, but they do affect the entire physicality of the user.
- The first to note is a side side-effect. It is related to the consumption of acetaminophen that often accompanies the drug. Acetaminophen can affect the liver and cause resulting toxicity in the body at certain doses.
- Hydrocodone itself can cause reduced mental function and a generally depressed nervous system function.
- In some cases itching may occur in users.
- In other cases an exaggerated sense of well-being may manifest.
In cases of overdose the skin may develop a bluish color. The muscles may go limp while breathing and sweating may increase. Vomiting or nausea may occur as well.
