What is Ritalin?
Ritalin is a stimulant to the central nervous system. It is also known as methylphenidate, and is a powerful drug that is of the same class as cocaine. It affects the brain in such a way that it causes certain chemical reactions in the brain and nerves, eventually causing them to malfunction.
Why do people use Ritalin?
Ritalin is a drug prescribed to people who suffer from so-called ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder), ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder), and narcolepsy (involuntary falling to or having the need to sleep). A lot of teens have become addicted to Ritalin and has caused quite a stir in the U.S.
As Ritalin only takes effect by causing a malfunction in the central nervous system, there are no solid proofs on how it directly cures the above mentioned disorders. It has effects similar but more potent than that of caffeine.
Ritalin addiction is very common nowadays to the youth, which is even increasing in popularity at an alarming rate. And since there are also no specific tests to directly diagnose ADD and ADHD patients, some individuals gain access to the drug by feigning these disorders’ symptoms or by claiming to suffer from such illnesses.
What are the signs of Ritalin addiction?
People who are addicted to Ritalin may manifest withdrawal symptoms include feeling nauseated, insomnia, exhaustion, cramps in the abdomen area, anxiety and depression, and extreme emotional instability. Addiction to the drug may also cause a Ritalin dependent to have palpitations, headaches, contraction of the muscles, enlargement of the pupils, hypertension, and a very high body temperature.
What are the side effects of Ritalin addiction?
Ritalin can cause great discomfort and health risks. Ritalin addiction can cause a user to have the following side effects:
- Loss of appetite resulting to weight loss
- Nervousness, restlessness, and paranoia
