The androgenic and virilizing properties of these steroids include the development of masculine attributes. While athletes and sportspeople appreciate the improvement in their performance, they often do not pay sufficient attention to the detrimental impact that these substances have on their health.

The side effects from using steroids include liver cancer, heart attack and increased levels of cholesterol in both men and women. In teenagers and adolescents the use of steroids may lead to a stop in bone growth thus leading to stunted development of the body. People who inject steroids are subject to the additional risk of contracting hepatitis or HIV from contaminated syringes. The withdrawal symptoms associated with steroids too can be very bad. These include mood swings, loss of libido, restlessness, fatigue and depression.

An extremely large percentage of steroid users are youngsters as they are the ones who would be the most likely group to have an interest in sport and athletics. Therefore it is imperative for parents of teenage children to ensure that their children do not fall into the trap of using steroids to enhance performance.
