Steroid Addiction

Steroids Addiction
The role of steroids in enhancing the performance of athletes has been much in the news from banned athletes. Many others have been barred from participation because of failing dope tests which are carried out to check the use of steroids by competing athletes. A lot has indeed been carried by the media about the impact of steroids.

What has not been as well reported is how rampant the use of steroids is among ordinary people and the fact excessive use is fraught with dangerous consequences. Anabolic steroids are consumed orally, injected into muscle, or rubbed into the skin. Typically there are three methodologies involved in using steroids- cycling that involves consuming multiple doses over different periods of time, stacking that involves combining different types of steroids, and pyramiding in which users gradually increase intake reaching a peak and then progressively reducing intake.

The consumption of these steroids leads to increased protein synthesis within cells, because of which there is a buildup of cellular tissue. The androgenic and virilizing properties of these steroids include the development of masculine attributes. While athletes and sportspeople appreciate the improvement in their performance, they often do not pay sufficient attention to the detrimental impact that these substances have on their health.

The side effects from using steroids include liver cancer, heart attack and increased levels of cholesterol in both men and women. In teenagers and adolescents the use of steroids may lead to a stop in bone growth thus leading to stunted development of the body. People who inject steroids are subject to the additional risk of contracting hepatitis or HIV from contaminated syringes. The withdrawal symptoms associated with steroids too can be very bad. These include mood swings, loss of libido, restlessness, fatigue and depression.

An extremely large percentage of steroid users are youngsters as they are the ones who would be the most likely group to have an interest in sport and athletics. Therefore it is imperative for parents of teenage children to ensure that their children do not fall into the trap of using steroids to enhance performance. In the event of their making such a discovery about their child they should not hesitate to give us a call.

Sport and athleticism have always been synonymous with the best in human endeavor, as it involves, hard work determination and a spirit of competitiveness which help shape character. It is deeply ironic and sad that the scourge of steroids should convert this into something corrupt and detrimental to health.
