What is Valium?
Valium belongs to the group of drugs known as the benzodiazepines. Valium goes by the generic name Diazepam.
Why do people use Valium?
In a few surgeries, Valium is prescribed to lessen the tension of the muscles such that the operation may be carried out properly. Sometimes, it is even used to induce temporary amnesia before conducting a major surgical operation to a patient.
However, due to its addictive properties, Valium became one of the drugs that are often abused. Valium addiction may occur once it has been used by an individual more often or in much greater doses than prescribed. Some have been introduced to the drug by friends.
What are the signs of Valium addiction?
If a user starts to have an uncontrollable desire to get hold of Valium, it is a clear indicator of Valium addiction. Blunt emotions or confusion may also be exhibited by someone who is hooked to this drug.
What are the side effects of Valium?
Valium can cause the following:
- Withdrawal symptoms like vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite
- Sleepiness
- Headaches or lower memory retention
- Birth defects to an unborn baby (when a pregnant mother uses Valium)
- Slower comprehension rate
- Weakened motor skills and loss of balance
For some who have a history of sleep apnea (breathing stops or is intermittent while asleep), Valium may cause extreme palpitations and may lead to respiratory arrest.
